About the work
Two standing forms carved from the same trunk, one burnt deeper than the other, so that one is a soft grey and the other a dense, shining black. Langat shows them close together, a hand's width apart.
Condition
Excellent.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist by the present owner, 2024.
The artist
Langat carves standing forms from felled cypress, then chars the surface with fire and brushes it back, until the wood is matt black with a faint silver grain. The figures are tall and narrow, never quite human, and are often shown in pairs. He grew up near Eldoret, where his father farmed timber, and he still cuts every log himself.
