About the work
A woman in a marigold dress sits with her back to us in an armchair, in a sitting room painted entirely in cobalt: walls, curtains and the patterned cloth of the chair are all the same intense blue, divided only by pattern. Painted in the first months of 2020, it is one of the largest of Nalubega's interiors.
Condition
Very good. Unvarnished, as the artist intended.
Provenance
Private collection, Kampala; by descent to the present owner.
Exhibited
Kampala, Rooms, a group exhibition, 2021.
The artist
Nalubega paints women in rooms: sitting rooms, waiting rooms, the back rooms of salons. Walls, curtains and dresses are all given the same weight, so that her figures sit inside a field of pattern and saturated colour. She trained as a textile designer before she turned to painting, and still begins every picture with a strip of fabric pinned beside the canvas.
