About the work

Two women wait on a bench in a pharmacy on the Entebbe road, under a wall of rose-pink tiles. Their dresses, one green and one striped, are painted as flatly as the tiles, so that the whole room becomes one woven surface.

Condition

Very good.

Provenance

Acquired from the artist, 2022; private collection, Nairobi.

The artist

Nalubega paints women in rooms: sitting rooms, waiting rooms, the back rooms of salons. Walls, curtains and dresses are all given the same weight, so that her figures sit inside a field of pattern and saturated colour. She trained as a textile designer before she turned to painting, and still begins every picture with a strip of fabric pinned beside the canvas.
