About the work
Kariakoo market at the end of the day, when the shadows of the stalls stretch across the street and the crowd thins to a few figures carrying baskets home. A late picture of the market, with the planes of shade laid on in long, flat bands.
Condition
Good. The board is sound and flat. Minor frame abrasion along the upper edge.
Provenance
Private collection, Dar es Salaam; acquired from the above by the present owner, 2008.
The artist
Mwakalinga painted the working life of Dar es Salaam for four decades: the fish market at dawn, the crowds of Kariakoo, the women who sold cloth at Mwenge. He broke each scene into flat, tilting planes of muted green and terracotta, so that a street becomes a pattern of shade and weight. He taught drawing at a secondary school until 2004, and painted at weekends and through the long school holidays.
