About the work

A long, low bench with a thick cypress seat resting on two blackened steel frames, the joints left visible at each end. Made to order for a house in Karen, and offered by its first owner.

Condition

Very good. Light wear to the seat consistent with use.

Provenance

Commissioned from the makers, 2022.

The artist

Studio Kokwet is a furniture workshop in Ruaraka run by two cabinetmakers who met as apprentices. They work in cypress, olive wood and reclaimed hardwoods, with visible joinery and a few pieces of blackened steel, and make every piece to order. A kokwet is a council of elders; the studio's first piece was a long bench.
