About the work
A carved doorway in Lamu's old town, drawn in brown ink with a dip pen: the frame, the chains of carved flowers and the step worn hollow in the middle. The shade inside the half-open door is built from thousands of fine lines.
Condition
Excellent.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist, Mombasa, 2022.
The artist
Abdalla draws the old towns of the coast in brown ink with a dip pen: doorways, stairwells, the corners where carved wood meets coral stone. Each drawing takes several weeks of fine hatching, built up until the paper seems to hold shade. She grew up in Lamu and studied architecture before she left it to draw.
