About the work

A tall bottle with a narrow neck, fired for three days in Juma's wood kiln near Kilifi. Ash from the firing settled on the shoulder and ran down one side as a pale green glaze; the other side is bare, flashed orange by the flame.

Condition

Excellent.

Provenance

Acquired from the artist by the present owner, 2023.

The artist

Juma throws stoneware vessels and fires them in a wood kiln she built near Kilifi, where the ash from three days of firing settles on the shoulders of the pots and runs into glaze. Her tall bottles and wide bowls carry the marks of where they sat in the kiln, and no two come out alike.
