About the work
Papyrus reeds stand against the black water of the Nile at Jinja, with the outline of a moored boat behind. The blacks are wiped by hand, plate by plate, until they look like velvet.
Condition
Excellent.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist, Jinja, 2017.
The artist
Okello makes etchings and aquatints of the Nile at Jinja at night: reeds, moored boats and the black water between them. He prints on a press he rebuilt himself, wiping each plate by hand to get the deep, velvety blacks that his editions are known for.
